Today, we have been quoted in The Critic magazine as Jo Bartosch explores the Parliamentary Office for Science and Technology’s new “consultation” on surrogacy.
We believe the outcome of this consultation has been pre-determined, with the language used by POST already discussing updating “outdated” law, and “access to surrogacy”.
There is no right to access surrogacy or take babies away from their mothers. Babies bond in utero with their mothers and need and want only her at birth. Surrogate pregnancies are 3x higher risk for severe pregnancy complications, including postpartum haemorrhage, pre-eclampsia and sepsis, as well as being higher risk for mental health problems post-birth.
It would appear to us as though POST has been captured by pro-surrogacy academics and lobbyists, and isn’t considering the perspective of the child or the mother. With Government already saying they do not intend to change the law on surrogacy within this Parliament, and the Law Commission having already spent nearly £1 million of public money on a consultation on surrogacy (in which more than half of respondents called for a total ban), we wonder how this consultation is possibly a good use of public time or money.
