Helen published an article about this issue in The Critic in January 2025, following the news that the HFEA, the British fertility regulator, had met to discuss the issue of egg and sperm cells created from skin and other cells of the body, known as in-vitro derived gametes. In the same week it was announced that mouse pups were born who had two male genetic parents. You can read Helen’s article here.
Along with other women’s rights groups including Stop Surrogacy Now UK, we wrote to the Government in July 2024, expressing our deep reservations about in-vitro derived gametes, and other concerning developments in this field, including synthetic embryo models, womb transplants and artificial wombs. The reply we received did not meaningfully address our concerns and we do not believe Government fully appreciates the enormity of what is coming down the track. We will continue to raise the alarm with Government and ask that if in-vitro derived gametes are successfully developed abroad that they are not permitted for clinical use in the UK, and nor should research in to this area take place here nor should these artificial embryos be allowed to be imported in to the UK.
