Surrogacy Concern quoted in The Times

Our founder has been quoted in The Times, following the news that Nigeria has become the second most popular international surrogacy destination for British-resident commissioning parents, behind the US.

Surrogacy Concern uncovered the information following a Freedom of Information request to CAFCASS, who revealed Nigeria has shot up the international league tables of surrogacy destinations for Britons seeking surrogacy abroad.

We are extremely worried about this development, given Nigeria’s high maternal mortality rate, significant numbers of women living in poverty and noted child trafficking and safeguarding failures. Adoption in to the UK from Nigeria is on a restricted list as a result of concerns relating to corruption, lack of checks, trafficking and abuse within their child protection system. It is ludicrous in our view that surrogacy is not subject to the same rules.

We are campaigning for a ban on the pursuit of international surrogacy by British residents: commercial surrogacy is banned in the UK, therefore we do not believe Britons should be able to get around this ban and effectively buy babies off their mothers abroad.

We continue to demand an end to surrogacy at home and abroad. Surrogacy is unethical, cruel and exploitative. It needs to be consigned to the dustbin of history.

About

We are a group of women and men in the UK, who have come together to oppose liberalisation of the law on surrogacy and to raise awareness of the surrogacy industry; we also oppose egg harvesting for the purposes of egg donation, and payments for egg donors. We do not believe it is right to separate mothers and their children, nor do we believe the law should be relaxed to make surrogacy easier in Britain.

Our founder and volunteers hail from left wing backgrounds; we campaign against surrogacy from a feminist perspective, which fundamentally centres the right of children to remain with their mothers, and against the commodification of women’s bodies and the commercialization of pregnancy. All are welcome to join us in our fight.
